Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape offers 165 campsites across remarkably diverse terrain — the rugged Wild Coast, Tsitsikamma forest gorges, Addo Elephant National Park, and the vast Great Karoo. It is one of South Africa's best-value camping regions, with SANParks camps at Addo and Karoo National Park among the most sought-after bookings in the country.

Free State

The Free State has 79 campsites spread across its golden highland landscape — from the spectacular sandstone formations of Golden Gate Highlands National Park near Clarens to the vast Gariep Dam and the Drakensberg foothills. A malaria-free province with a pleasant dry-season climate, it is popular with overland travellers and a great stopover between KZN and the Cape.

Gauteng

Gauteng's 56 campsites serve as convenient stopovers for travellers transiting through South Africa's economic hub, with options ranging from the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve south of Johannesburg to sites near the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Most are one- or two-night bases before heading out to Limpopo, Mpumalanga, or North West for longer bush stays.

KwaZulu Natal

KwaZulu-Natal packs 160 campsites into one of Southern Africa's most varied landscapes — the uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountains, the subtropical iSimangaliso Wetland Park coastline, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, and family caravan parks along the KZN south coast. KZN Wildlife reserves require advance bookings, particularly Drakensberg sites during June and July school holidays.

Limpopo Province

Limpopo Province is South Africa's bushveld heartland with 126 campsites concentrated around Kruger National Park's northern and central sections, the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, and the ancient Soutpansberg mountains. The dry winter months (May–September) offer the best game viewing and most comfortable camping conditions; summer brings intense heat and malaria risk in lowveld areas.

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga is home to 77 campsites clustered around two major drawcards: Kruger National Park's busiest southern and central camps, and the Panorama Route — Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, and the waterfalls around Sabie and Graskop. Rest camps like Skukuza, Berg-en-Dal, and Lower Sabie book out a year in advance for peak season.

North West

North West Province offers 90 campsites within easy reach of Johannesburg, centred on Pilanesberg National Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, and the Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam areas. It is one of the few malaria-free Big Five destinations in South Africa, making it ideal for family camping safaris within a two-hour drive of Gauteng.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is South Africa's largest province and one of its most rewarding camping destinations, with 164 campsites spread across the Kalahari dunes, Augrabies Falls National Park, the Richtersveld mountain desert, and the Orange River corridor. Best visited May to September when temperatures are manageable and the Kalahari night sky is extraordinary.

Western Cape

The Western Cape is South Africa's most popular camping destination with 325 listed campsites spanning the iconic Garden Route, Cederberg Wilderness, Cape Peninsula, Overberg Whale Coast, and Cape Winelands. Expect everything from SANParks forest camps under tall pines to private caravan parks steps from the beach. Book at least three months ahead for peak December and Easter periods.

Northern Province

Northern Province is an older name sometimes still used for Limpopo Province, famous for its baobab-dotted bushveld, Mapungubwe heritage site, and access to Kruger National Park.
